Part 3: Causes of Panic Attacks

So Where to Begin…..

Where to start finding the information on panic attacks?

Like many of you, I turned to the internet.

Here is briefly what I discovered.

Firstly, what actually causes panic attacks or anxiety issues…there are many factors.

Here is what I discovered.

First and foremost, put simply, anxiety is the fear of the unknown.

There are several different distinctive classifications of anxiety disorders, and one thing you should know, panic attacks and anxiety are the same thing, just different orders of magnitude.

It is estimated that about 25 percent of the population suffers from one of these disorders. Isn’t that incredible - think about it, that is almost a hundred million people in the United States alone!

At the root cause of panic attacks is control, or rather, lack of control.

More than anything, a sufferer of panic attacks fears having a lack of control in a situation or in their life.

Typically, depression also goes hand in hand with panic attacks and most people suffering from panic attacks are also diagnosed with depression of one form or another.

The scientific classification of the disorders that will cause a panic attack are General Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Post Traumatic Stress disorder. The symptoms for these disorders may vary, but at the core of them all is lack of control.

What triggers panic attacks?  In a word, stress plays a huge role in triggering a panic attack.

Most people who have a panic attack for the first time have experiences a significant cause of stress in their daily life. And this is important to know - that person may have even handled the stressful event itself in a contained and controlled manner when it initially happened!

Panic attacks and anxiety  can be broken down into two root causes. Physical causes and Environmental causes. Since the physical causes are not what I dealt with, and are not the majority cause affecting most people, I will speak more to Environmental causes.

Panic/Anxiety attacks are usually the result of incidents happening in someone’s life that are deemed to be exceedingly stressful. The more stress the body takes on, the more likely the stress will manifest itself into a panic attack. Some of the major stress triggers of panic attacks include:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Breakup of a marriage or relationship
  • Loss of a job
  • Illness
  • Moving
  • Getting a new job
  • Having a baby
  • Getting married

You will notice that while several of the above list are negative stress factors, many could also be said to be positive in nature.

Moving can be exciting, but it is still a form of stress, even if it is your dream home.

Getting married and having a baby are two joyous occasions, but still are major components of stress because they force you out of a comfort zone.

And again, at the time the event is occurring, you may feel in complete control. It is usually after one of these events that you will experience a panic or anxiety attack.

If you suffering from panic attacks, know that you are far from alone.
While most people will not come up to you and discuss their anxiety attacks, the more people you get to know and talk to about anxiety, the more you will see that there are many others just like you who suffer from the same thing. You are not alone.

But more importantly, there is a way to break the cycle of panic attacks, and I will continue to disclose my path to recovery, my personal story as time goes on…

Thanks for reading,

Michael

have been reading your posts on panic attacks and have found your perspective in total agreement with that I’ve experienced. (I didn’t have my company taken away from me, but lost it just the same.)

I’ve read the information on Panic Away… awesome program, btw… but you are so dead on that the only way to get control of this horrible condition is to face it straight on… gotta get right in your head, and no one can do that for you… and you CAN’T get that from a pill!

Hiya, i have seen your site when searching a few weeks ago and i really love the design! I just bought a new 3 character domain (cost me a packet) for a niche review blog, and i was wondering if your design is a free or paid one? I’m new to Wordpress and about to set it up, and i would really like to get something with a similar look to yours. Any ideas where i could download or buy something similar? Thanks for your help! :)

Sometimes a professional can help… but in my experience, a professional did little more than provide a resource to talk through the issues… answers are still up to the individual.

Working through and learning to control your own reaction or how stress effects you is, was an always will be up to you… even when anti-anxiety meds or anti-depressants are involved.

Hello, i guess this is as good of a place as any to post and let you know. I went to subscribe to your RSS feed, and when i clicked it i got an error that said “Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_CONSTANT_ENCAPSED_STRING” followed by other gibberish that scrolled off the screen. I had to force the page to stop loading because it locked up my browser. Cheers, Mick.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention… had an overwhelming number of spam posts (very long and nothing but gibberish with lots of links!) that may have caused problems for our feed.

This article is really interesting as the majority of people are prone to panic attacks. Especially, the ones caused by a job loss under the conditions of a crisis.
