Humor - Treatment for Panic Attacks

It is often said that laughter is the world’s best medicine. Scientists know that when we laugh, we boost our mood. Start to find the humor in life and you may start to feel better. should include laughter!

So let me ask you - what are you watching on television right now?

It only makes sense that much of the reason that we feel anxious all of the time is because we are constantly being bombarded by negative information. It is impossible to turn on television, pick up a paper, or even go to your internet homepage without seeing, hearing or reading of bad news. Yes, the world is an ugly place at times, but that is no reason to invite in it constantly. While you do not want to go around with your head in the sand all of the time, unless you are the head of state, you do not have to know every single problem that exists in the world. Turn off the television, read a good book, go to a funny movie or even watch a sitcom on TV - find something to put humor back into your life. can begin as easily as changing the television channel.

Let me give you an example…..

After 9/11, many people became anxious or depressed. This was a very trying time for Americans and many feared another attack. People began seeking help for , and also became increasingly fearful that another attack was going to harm them or someone who they loved. In Chicago, 210 people who worked in the Sears Tower in some capacity actually quit their jobs out of fear. At that time, those businesses or firms in the Sears Tower in Chicago were actually paying more money for people to work there - so deep was the fear.

One of the reasons why many people became very anxious after 9/11 is because we were bombarded with this horrific event over and over again. While the nation tried to make sense of what was happening, tried to cope with the fear, anger and grief, news coverage was non-stop. Local television stations canceled their regular broadcasting for a week and devoted everything to this catastrophic event. It was replayed in our eyes and in our minds a thousand times.

While the 9/11 case was very unique and hopefully will remain so, the effects of being bombarded with negative images and horrifying stories became more than most Americans could bear. Is it no wonder that so many people sought anxiety and after these events?

While this event was shocking and it was essential to let people know what is going on, it demonstrates just how such intense coverage can play a role in the psyche of people. If you surround yourself with negative images and stories by watching the news non-stop, you may find yourself getting anxious or even depressed. What are you watching on television most of the time or reading on the internet? Take a look at your viewing habits - they may be able to tell you why you are feeling anxious, and in fact may tell you something about your fear of the unknown - could it possibly be caused by your participation in the daily bombardment of negativity by the mainstream media? While there is no question news can be important, sadly, our media, especially over the last 8 years, has gone overboard painting a negative image of almost everything to the point of no longer providing news, but rather opinion. Turn it off!

Try to incorporate some humor into your life to alleviate the stress. To begin , one of the easiest ways to do this is to watch some humor on television. If you feel yourself getting anxious, flip on the TV and watch the comedy channel or some other program that is funny. You can even put a DVD in of your favorite comedy movie. This can help you cope with your anxiety and may relieve it a little for you.

When learning to , start by changing your TV viewing habits as well as what you read online. Change your home page if yours is filled with depressing events. Try this experiment on yourself to see if it makes a difference in how you feel. You might start feeling your mood start to elevate after you have changed your habits to something lighter.

Many people swear by using humor as a way to treat many mental disorders, especially anxiety and depression. There are those who say that their positive approach to life enabled them to beat disease, including cancer, when doctors had given up hope. I know you have heard these stories, you may even know someone who beat a serious disease through the power of their mind. If laughter can do this for such serious diseases as these, how effective to you think it can be to help you ?

You have the power in your mind to be a happier person if you want it. Start using your mind in this fashion and you may start to feel much happier mentally and also feel the burden of your depression starting to lift. is important in learning to .

Agreed. Humor can be quite helpful with those who have Panic Attacks because it takes all your attention away and fills you up with happiness and ‘good’ feeling hence you’re not worried about things for atleast few hours.

I am not sure whether it works for everyone or not, but personally for me sometimes it works very very well.
